Today was difficult and fracturous at times because we had to move from our accommodation to a new place for 3 nights and at the same time keeping going with the ringing without a couple of the group who were involved in the move The alternative accommodation is much larger and on the banks of a river and lake. Across the lake lives a pair of Great Grey Owls which we would love to see.. The downfall is we have no electricity or running water. We are cooking on gas and water is collected from the river.
It was another really hot day today. It is going to change by the weekend, apparently. The bright sunlight continues but does not appear to deter the birds from entering the nets. Today was a slow start but ended being the best in terms of numbers with 15 species and one new bird, a Rustic Bunting. We also had two new Three Toed Woodpeckers a male and a female, 5 Little Buntings, 3 Siberian Tits, Siberian Jay re-trap and our second Great Grey Shrike.
The Little Bunting in the picture were two out of the 5 caught today the bird on the left being a juvenile and the one on the right an adult.
A couple of Willow tits
The great grey Shrike was aged as a Juvenile. The second bird for our trip the last one being 16th.
The rump and flank feathers have a very Rustic colour to them. The bird is a little bigger than the Little Bunting but the colouration is the main thing to look for. You can see the rustic colouring of the rump feathers in the picture above
You can clearly see the rustic colouring on the flank feathers in this picture.
